Below is pictured what we call olive trees. They are not the same kind of tree that produce the fruit that you put on your pizza. But they do produce very small olive looking fruit which attracts the monkeys when ripe. The wood of this tree is extremely dense and beautiful, but these trees typically don’t grow very straight and are often quite gnarled which means it is hard to use the wood for building large items. These trees make such good firewood and charcoal, that not many survive in the forests, but they are also great shade trees and their odd look makes them good landscape trees, so they do survive on private property. Many olive trees on campus here are quite old.
