I ran across this mysterious plant while jogging the other day. There are some strange characteristics about this plant including, swept back flower peddles, flower pistals that stick out at a 90 degree angle, and the leaves act like vines, twirling around other things as the plant climbs. After picking this flower and putting it in a vase in our dining room, our worker, Elisheba told me that “If you knew the name of that flower, you would not have it in your house!” I asked her what it was called and she said, “The Devil’s Flower” (that is a translation of the Kikuyu words which I cannot recall). The common name is the Flame Lily and it turns out to be quite common in Africa, but according to material I found on the internet, all parts of this plant are very toxic to humans, and it has been used to commit suicide and murder, a lethal dose being only 6mg / kg. However, in very small quantity, it can be used to kill intestinal worms and cure gout. The main toxin that this plant produces is colchicine which is actually used in gout medications.
