You probably recognize this animal. The cheetah is by far the “coolest” of the big cats, often posing for the camera and usually very happy to be a star. Unlike lions and leopards, cheetahs are not nocturnal, so they may easily be seen in the daytime if you find yourself driving through their territory. Speaking of territory, this animal once freely roamed the savannah preferring wide open spaces (if you see one in a zoo cage, take pity upon it), but today they are consigned only to the game reserves where they are protected. We drove within 30 feet of the cheetah pictured below without it showing the least bit of fear. In fact it seemed rather curious about us, constantly peering over its shoulder before slowly galumphing off.
